Walking Tours of Portaferry and Strangford led by Brigid Watson of Sustainable Journeys Ireland
1. History and heritage of Portaferry - 2 hours
Once an important shipbuilding centre, Portaferry is now a picturesque tourist destination nestled on the shore of Strangford Lough. On this walk, explore the economic and social history of the town and visit local buildings of architectural interest. Learn about Portaferry’s maritime industrial heritage, key people who shaped the development of the town, and hear stories about the impact of the Vikings in this coastal area.
· Walk 1. Friday 25th: Start point and times: 11 am outside the Portaferry Hotel (opposite the ferry terminal)
· Walk 2. Saturday 26th: it starts at 1.15 pm outside the Portaferry Hotel (opposite the ferry terminal)
· Walk 3. Sunday 27th: starts at 10.10 am outside the Lobster Pot, the Square, Strangford
· Festival ticket price for each walking tour £3
Bring warm clothing, including hat and rainproof gear. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour ends back at the Portaferry Hotel.
2. Woodland and Heritage tour, Strangford Village and Compass Wood - 1.5 hours
Leaving the centre of Strangford, we walk along a track into Compass Wood. The beautiful woodland path goes to the shores of Strangford Lough where you will see seabirds and maybe a seal or two on the rocks. We walk through a lime tree avenue and circle back to the village where you will learn about the maritime heritage of the village and the influence of the Vikings.
· Walk 4. Friday 25th. Start point and times: 2 pm outside the Lobster Pot restaurant which is on the Square.
· Walk 5. Saturday 26th. it starts at 10.15 am outside the Lobster Pot restaurant
· Walk 6. Sunday 27th. it starts at 12.30 pm outside the Portaferry Hotel (opposite the ferry terminal)
· Festival ticket price for each walking tour £3
Bring warm clothing, including a hat and rainproof gear. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The first stretch of the route may be muddy in wet weather so a spare pair of shoes is recommended. Tour ends back outside the Lobster Pot in the village square.
